Instagram grid size: what changed with the 3:4 profile grid
Instagram now shows posts on the profile as vertical 3:4 thumbnails instead of squares. Here is what that means for post dimensions, split grids and puzzle feeds — and how to keep a connected layout intact.
What changed
Squares in your files, rectangles on the profile
For years the profile grid was made of squares, so a 1080×1080 post was shown in full. In January 2025 Instagram switched the profile to 3:4 rectangles. Square posts are now cropped at the sides in the grid, while the full image still appears when someone opens the post.
For single posts this is a minor detail. For split images and puzzle feeds it is a big deal: the parts that get cut away are exactly the seams where one tile should continue into the next.
On top of the crop, the profile keeps thin gaps between posts. Any layout that assumes squares touching edge to edge will look misaligned on a phone.

Portrait post, 4:5. 1080×1350 px. The feed standard; a thin strip is cropped from the sides in the profile thumbnail.
